Traffic jam in Lagos won’t end anytime soon - NUPENG

Tokunbo Korodo, south-west chairman of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), says the harrowing experience of Lagos motorists and commuters arising from the fuel scarcity and gridlock on roads may not end anytime soon. According to Korodo, the trucks causing the gridlock on Eko, Liverpool and Coconut bridges, which has affected other major roads, such as Ikorodu road, may not leave the roads anytime soon despite the directive of the Lagos state govt.

Speaking with NAN in Lagos on Thursday, he said that only three depots out of over 50 in the state had petroleum products to dispense. “The development has compelled hundreds of trucks to head for the three depots to lift oil. This is the key reason for the unprecedented traffic jam that has locked down Lagos in recent days.”

Stakeholders at the meeting were NUPENG, petroleum tankers drivers (PID), national association of road transport owners (NARTO), association of maritime truck owners (AMATO) and independent petroleum markers association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Residents in Nigeria’s economic capital have faced tough times trying to buy premium motor spirit, and their woes have been compounded by traffic jams on most roads in the city. Korodo named the three depots currently having oil as capital oil and gas tank farm, ibeto oil and gas tank farm, and integrated oil and gas tank farm, all in the Apapa.

He said the gridlock would ease if trucks queuing for oil would load and leave Lagos by weekend. But observers say such scenario is unlikely. Korodo suggested that the nigerian national petroleum corporation should decentralise loading of petroleum products to ease the pressure on Lagos. “This is the only way Lagos residents can get reprieve from the gridlock, which has forced up transport fares and cost of foodstuff,” he said.

Police arrests four Edo govt officials over cult activities

Barely 24 hours after the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, dispatched a special squad to Edo State to tackle the spate of cultism, kidnapping, robbery and other related crimes, the team has arrested 11 suspected leaders of cult groups in the state, among them, four state government functionaries.

Police sources said the team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad, FEDSARS, Chris Ezike, stormed the hideout of the cultists few hours after arriving Benin City and successfully arrested leaders of cult confraternities for alleged complicity and murder of 10 Nigerians in the last one month in Edo State.

The cult leaders were arrested on suspicion of conspiratorial involvement in  alleged murder of one Ojo Ayeadu, 55, at old Benin-Auchi Road  and nine other persons at different locations in Benin City and its environs.

Reacting to the development, an Edo State Government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “Those arrested, from what we gathered, are junior workers of the War Against Indiscipline. The state governor does not condone cultism, which explains why when one of his bodyguards was accused of being involved in cultism, he ordered his arrest, which was done immediately.”

Confirming the arrests, Force Public Relations Officer, Ag Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, told Vanguard on phone: “Yes, a good number of arrests has been made, irrespective of their status.  The figures are still coming in.  The thrust of the IG is yielding positive results.”
Sources said the suspects include Engr. David Olukoga, 46, who is the Chairman, Edo State Committee on War Against Indiscipline and  Senior Special Assistant on Youth Enhancement to the Governor of the State, Osunde Aigbedo, 48; Executive Director, Special Duties, Government House, Edo State, Dr. Salako Adebowale, 43, of UBTH, Benin-City; Ernest Amadasun, 49, the Managing Director, Pohien Investments and National Coordinator, Human Assistant Initiative and Adebo Ejuaoje, 46, of the Ministry of Education, Science and Tech Vocational, Iyaro, Benin City.

They were alleged to belong to Eiye, Black Axe, Buccaneers, Aiye and Jurist confraternities.

The suspects denied complicity in the murder charge but made very useful statements to the police.  It was learned from sources that the suspects, with others at large, have been fingered as brains behind the sustained and vicious inter and intra-cult war that engulfed Edo State in recent times leading to avoidable loss of lives.

It was gathered that following the development, the Inspector-General of Police ordered that robust and coordinated anti-robbery patrols of identified black spots along Isua – Ibillo Road, Ibillo –Lakpese – Okene roads while all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers in the area are to partake in the special operation.

‘How Ekiti is made ungovernable whenever APC loses’

Ekiti State Government has described as “evil, wicked and insensitive” claim by the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the State that the ‘stop and search’ operation ordered by the State Security Council to stem cases of kidnapping in the State was an orchestrated plot by the governor to track them for kidnap to stall Governor Ayodele Fayose’s impeachment plot.

The government said such unwarranted allegation coming from the runaway APC lawmakers was a clear exposure of the culpability of the party in the kidnapping of residents of Ekiti State, adding that; “they have betrayed their guilt by simply telling Nigerians that they want the kidnapping of Ekiti residents to continue.”

According to the Special Assistant to the State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, “The Fayose-led government will do everything humanly possible to protect lives and properties of Ekiti people and what is expected from genuine lovers of the State is to cooperate with security agencies, and not politicisation of every efforts of the government by the APC.”

Olayinka, who said the APC in Ekiti State was living up to its real identity as a congregation of evil minded people, asked; “Isn’t it interesting that elements like Kehinde Boluwade and Folorunso Gabriel Ogundele, who are standing trial for alleged murder are among the APC lawmakers they claimed Governor Fayose planned to kidnap?”

The statement read; “Our attention has been drawn to a reckless, wicked, insensitive and evil press statement issued on behalf of the APC lawmakers by a certain Wole Olujobi, wo has been impersonating as Media Aide of the Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, insinuating that the ‘stop and search’ operation ordered by the State Security Council to stem kidnapping in the state was meant to track the APC lawmakers down for kidnap.

“For the avoidance of doubt, introduction of strict security measures and check points in strategic places across the state, prohibition of the usage of tinted classes, frequent hotel checks, with a call to hoteliers to monitor their customers and offer information to security agents on any suspected person and seal up of any hotel linked to criminals were resolutions of the Ekiti State Security Council meeting that took place on Monday.

“Only wicked and evil people, whose agenda is to make Ekiti State ungovernable will kick against these measures that are aimed at securing the lives and properties of the people.

“Most importantly, it is on record that Ekiti State is always made ungovernable whenever the APC elements lose power, and the unfortunate criminal activities that we have witnessed in the last few days cannot but be traceable to the plot by the APC to discredit the government by presenting it as incapable of securing lives and properties in the State.

“From past experiences, organised crimes have become the major tools used by the APC elements to make Ekiti State unsafe whenever they lose power to the PDP.

For instance, when Engr Segun Oni of the PDP was governor, they made Ekiti ungovernable, using kidnapping and armed robbery. Even when
Governor Fayose was governor between 2003 and 2006, these same people perpetrated various heinous crimes, pinning the crimes on the
government.

“On January 3, 2009, Kehinde Fasubaa was killed in Ado-Ekiti; on August 2, 2009, three officers of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), SP Mohammed Manua, CPL Wasiu Olatunbosun and CPL Simeon Obadero were killed at Fajuyi Park area, Ado Ekiti; on August 3, 2009, the then Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Barrister R.K. Olaiya and his wife, Barrister Franca Olaiya, Chief Olayode Olusola and two others were kidnapped at Ikole-Ekiti, on October 7, 2009, one Rev Jeje, Sanusi and Odigie Harrison were killed at Ifaki-Ekiti during an armed robbery; on January 30, 2010, Attah of Aiyede, Oba Adeleye Orisagbemi, Provost of the College of Education, Ikere, Dr. Gabriel Olowoyo and two others were kidnapped and murdered.

“It is important to note that all these organised crimes ended the very first day the APC elements regained power in the State.

“Furthermore, these same people were the ones who invaded Ekiti State with militants during the 2009 rerun governorship election. Some of
the militants were arrested in Ijan-Ekiti by security details of the then Acting Governor, Rt. Hon. Tunji Odeyemi and the man who led them
to Ijan-Ekiti was identified as Sunday, a native of Isan-Ekiti.

“As it appears, now that the evil plot by this ‘we must rule by fire by force’ elements in the APC to impeach Governor Fayose and his deputy, Dr Olusola Eleka and return to power through the backdoor has failed, they have returned to their old tactics, which is organised crimes!

“Kidnapping and armed robberies have now become rampant in Ekiti as it was in 2009 when they desperately wanted to snatch power from Engr Segun Oni of the PDP.

“However, we wish to assure those whose joy will be to see Ekiti people in pains just because they lost power that they won’t succeed this time. Those whose stock-in-trade is to be Ekiti State ungovernable whenever they lose power should have a rethink, because this time around, Ekiti people will rise in defence of the governor and the government they enthroned with their overwhelming votes.

“Most importantly, we wish to assure residents of the State that the government will spare no effort to get rid of criminal elements that are obviously brought from other lands to terrorise our land.

“It should be noted that in other to boost security in the state and secure lives and property of the Ekiti State citizenry, the state government under Governor Ayodele Fayose launched a Security Trust Fund (STF). More than 20 Toyota Hilux vans equipped with modern security gadgets; had already been provided for the police and other security agents in the State.

“We are on top of the situation and the Almighty God will save our dear State, Ekiti from these vampires that have once again invaded the
State.”

My wife does not have any vagina opening, man tells court

An Abeokuta Customary Court sitting in Ake dissolved a three-year-old marriage between Mr Femi Olayiwole and wife, Kemi, due to the absence of vagina, deceit and frequent fighting.

Olayiwole told the court that his wife deceived him to marry her knowing that she could not bear him a child.

He accused his wife, who had failed to appear in court after being summoned several times, of living a false life, frequent fighting and threatening his life.

“My wife had been deceiving me since we got married I have never seen her pass through menstruation. My wife does not have any vagina opening.

“Anytime I ask her for sex, she would give an excuse to back up her refusal. Meanwhile, we have been praying to God to give us children.

“My wife did not tell me anything about her condition before we got married, until February this year that she confessed to me that she had never experienced menstruation in her life.

“I thought she was lying, so I went to see her parents who told me it was true, and that they thought their daughter explained to me before we got married,” Olayiwole told the court.

He pleaded with the court’s president to dissolve his three-year-old marriage that had nothing to show for both now and in future.

The defendant was absent in spite several summons by the court.

The court’s president, Mr, Olalekan Akande, dissolved the marriage, saying that both parties had made up their minds to part ways.

Akande said that both parties were free to remarry anybody of their choice, adding that the document of the marriage dissolution should be sent to Kemi.

A journalist inside the complex confirmed heavy fighting raged through the early hours of the morning and after dawn, with heavy weapons including cannons and rockets being used.

A top Burundian general, former intelligence chief Godefroid Niyombare, launched the coup on Wednesday, capping weeks of violent protests against the president’s controversial bid for a third term.

Nkurunziza was outside the country in neighbouring Tanzania when the coup was launched and has been blocked from returning to the central African nation by pro-coup troops who have seized the airport.
