Five feared missing, residents flee town as cult holds rite for Ooni

Ile Ife, the domain of demised foremost Yoruba monarch, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse 11, was a ghost town on Thursday.

Hordes of residents had fled the town ahead of a daylight rite of passage declared by the palace for the monarch which, going by the threat of a cult group and street discussions, could include human sacrifice.

By the time the 9am to 4pm curfew imposed by the palace ended, the residents expressed fears over the whereabouts of five persons.

A palace source said trees around the palace would be cut on Thursday (today), adding that a particular door in the palace had been opened to signify the demise of the Ooni.

Born into Ogboru Ruling House on January 1, 1930, the late Ooni became the 50th ruler of the ancient kingdom on the 6th of December, 1980.

Until his death, he was the Co-chairman of the Nigeria traditional Council.

Oba Sijuwade was said to have passed away on Tuesday evening 28th of  July, 2015 in a United Kingdom Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 85.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports claimed that five persons were missing in the Moore area of the town when the palace-imposed curfew ended.

Though the Ooni had reportedly died on Tuesday 28th July 2015, the official announcement was not made until Wednesday.

The announcement was initially made by the traditional town crier, while radio stations also broadcast it later in the day.

Subsequently, transition rites ‎were conducted part of which was the invocation of spirits, oro and others carried out in spiritual shrines.

Earlier, sources revealed that there were little hitches during some transition rites for the late Ooni, part of which was the feared absence of “an important sacrifice ingredient’.

When our correspondent visited the town on Wednesday, some of the residents were seen trooping out to neighbouring towns.

It was learnt that most of the strangers in Ile-Ife left on Tuesday evening, while students slept on campus.

It would also be recalled that management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife had warned its students to stay indoors or relocate to campus.

One of the fleeing residents, said: “This people (traditional rulers) look desperate. Their actions are suspicious. They seem to need to perform a sacrifice urgently. How will they say there is Oro and announce that there is no Oro again? I have been living here for over 40 years and I understand the tradition.

“You can see that I am not the only one leaving, others are also ‎going away. In my compound, I was the only person who slept overnight.”

Another resident told our correspondent that “the town doesn’t seems safe. I have travelled to Osogbo since yesterday and all my children and wife are here with me.”

Meanwhile, no fewer than five persons were feared missing in the Moore area of the town, according to unconfirmed sources.

Some residents alleged that five adults, two males and females ran out of the street, shouting that they could find their children.

It was however uncertain if the missing persons were victims of the Oro festival.

When our correspondent visited the area, the street was deserted and few residents seen declined comments.

Attempts to see traditional rulers in the vicinity also failed as they were said to have all gone to the palace.

A police officer at the Moore Police Division told our correspondent that no case of missing persons was reported at the station.

Depending on the cause of the Oro festival in Yorubaland, human beings and other living may sometimes serve as objects of sacrifice.

However, one of the Osoros (members of Oro cult) in Ile-Ife, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, ‎told our correspondent that the daylight Oro festival was not targeted at getting human beings.

“Ifa only demanded that a strange thing be done and not human being(s),” he said.

Earlier, the Public Relations Officer of the National Ife Descendant Association (NIDSA), OAU branch, Lady Bose, had quoted the  Lowa Adimula of Ife, Chief Joseph Ijaodola and Obadu Agbaye,  Oba Olajide Farotimi Faloba, that the oro did not necessarily mean a restriction on movement.

Bose in a broadcast message to students said, “It has been announced and cleared by Lowa Adimula of Ife, Chief Joseph Ijaodola and Obadu agbaye, Oba Olajide Farotimi Faloba, that there shall be no restriction on movement tomorrow (Wednesday). They both regarded d ongoing rumour as un-cemented and fallacy of the highest order.

The Osoro priests during the daylight ritual rite

“They admonished us to only regard news coming from d palace concerning the death of our king while we disregard any other source(s) of information on the same issue.”

Earlier, the Obalufe who sang a dirge, said the delay in the formal announcement of the monarch’s  passage was to follow tradition and perform necessary rites expected of them.

OAU students mock Ooni’s burial rituals

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) today in the campus premises trooped out to mock the rituals performed by the ‘Osoro’ priests to mark the final burial rite for the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade II.

The students dressed in costumes that depict the Oro’s procession in a mockery of the dead king.

It would be recall that the death of the Ooni of Ife has generated lots of controversies ranging from whether the king had truly died before disagreement over the curfew in the town unfolded among the palace chiefs and the sudden disappearance of the ‘Abobaku’.

The Abobaku was reported to have ran away immediately the prestigious Oba was reported. Abobaku is a man that dies with the king.

But our correspondent in Ile-Ife gathered that the Abobaku popularly called Sarun, is in the palace, now counting his days to be buried ‘alive’.

Comparing Tinubu to Awolowo is insulting, degrading - Adebanjo

Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has come for those who have been saying one of APC National leaders and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now the leader of the Yoruba race, saying they know nothing about what they are talking about, and saying Awolowo passed the mantle to him is insulting and degrading.

He said, "How can a name like that of Tinubu come up when we have the likes of Wole Soyinka, others who are more relevant in Yoruba land."

"That is part of the nonsense being peddled by the media. How can Tinubu be the leader of the Yoruba race? The background of Awolowo’s leadership was never because he was in government. It was his integrity and track record. Now, they are calling Tinubu the leader because he won an election. Is that the qualification for Yoruba leadership? There is no way you can compare Tinubu with Awolowo and I regard it as an insult. What is the knowledge of Tinubu? How many books has he published? Awolowo propounded theories and established philosophies such that a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Harold Wilson, said Awolowo was qualified to rule America.

Even though Awolowo was the leader of the opposition, the then President Shehu Shagari, honoured him with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic title despite the fact that the title is preserved only for Heads of State. That shows you the pedigree of Awolowo.

What of the background of Awolowo? Can we say the same of Tinubu? Comparing Awolowo to Tinubu is bringing Yoruba leadership to the ground. When did Tinubu come into prominence? Awolowo fought colonialism for years. But because Tinubu just won an election, those he has put in positions are now shouting ‘leader’. All those calling Tinubu Yoruba leader are his creations. They are Tinubu apologists. They are the ones he made governors and appointed commissioners. No prominent, self-respecting Yoruba man will accept Tinubu as a leader. How can Tinubu be a leader in a country where Prof. Wole Soyinka and others are? We have bigger characters in Yoruba land", he said to Punch.

Materials used by Boko Haram are sold in Nigerians shops - Ex Chief of Naval Staff

Immediate past Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin says that some of the materials used by Boko Haram members to make the devices they use in their various attacks are sold by Nigerians and in Nigerian shops.

According to The Nation, he said this while speaking to reporters after his pulling out ceremony at the Naval Base, Apapa in Lagos yesterday, August 12th.

“Terrorists are among us; they are very difficult for security agencies to identify without intelligence. Since they are among us, the source of materials used for their devices are sold by Nigerians and some from shops belonging to Nigerians.

To that end, one expects that owners of stolen equipment or those who suspicious equipment are bought from should report to the security agencies, their confidentiality is guaranteed because no one will disclose the source of the information.

I am appealing to Nigerians to support President Buhari and the security agencies so that they can do their jobs well. Believing in the effectiveness of intelligence gathering, Nigerians must provide the intelligence for security forces to be able to identify would-be bombers and suicide bombers; as well as monitoring to the extent that security forces can unravel where terrorists make their IEDs”, he said.

Hoodlums set 17-year- old ablaze, paste his obituary

Some hoodlums have set a 17-year-old boy, Lekan Agbaje, on fire on Amodu Street, in the Idi Oro, Mushin area of Lagos.

It was gathered that the attacker initially stabbed their victim before they set him ablaze and left him for dead.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Lekan was, however, rescued by passersby and policemen from the Alakara division, who rushed the teenager to a private hospital.

Our correspondent gathered that the assailants who were confident that the teenager was dead, pasted his obituary posters in the community.

It was learnt that on Saturday, at about 6pm, the teenager and a friend had strolled out, but were ambushed by the hoodlums.

Lekan, who the assailants reportedly claimed was a member of a rival faction, was dragged to a corner and stabbed several times.

Not done, the hoodlums doused him with kerosene before setting him on fire.

They reportedly fled the scene when they sighted a police patrol vehicle approaching the area.

When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Wednesday, a resident, who identified himself simply as Kehinde, said the hoodlums were holding an event in the area on Friday, which must be marked with killing.

He said, “The boys were about 100. They held a party in a house on the street. They wore blue shirts and caps. At about the evening time, the police patrol vans came into the area and arrested a good number of them.

“The boy was attacked at about evening time. We learnt that the hoodlums had to kill someone to mark their celebration. So, they attacked Lekan. They also pasted his obituary.”

When our correspondent visited the hospital where Lekan was being treated, the mother, who pleaded not to be named, said the family had spent N130,000 on him, adding that they had run out of money .

She stated that Lekan did not belong to any cult group, but was a victim of hoodlums’ indiscriminate attacks in the area.

She said, “They stabbed him with bottles in the face and stomach. His burnt body has yet to heal. We have spent about N130,000. The doctors said we should get another N250,000. I am tired. I am a hair dresser.

“He is not a cult member. He just finished secondary school. I want Nigerians and the government to help me. He is my first son. The hoodlums removed almost all his teeth. He cannot talk or eat.”

Our correspondent observed the teenager on the sick bed, with bandage on his head, waist and hands.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, had yet to respond to a text message sent to her phone on the incident as of press time.

Fire guts Christ Embassy church in Lagos

An early morning fire has razed a section of the Christ Embassy Church, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos State, destroying property said to be worth millions of naira.

The fire, which reportedly lasted for about two hours on yesterday, was said to have affected four 40-feet containers, reportedly being used as storage facilities by the church.

The fire, which was said to have started at about 4am, was caused by a burning heap of refuse, which later engulfed the containers near an uncompleted building on the church premises.

It will be recalled that another fire incident occurred in the church in March 2014, which razed generator houses, damaging about 10 generators.

According to a resident, who claimed to be an eyewitness, the Wednesday fire, which created panic and later caused gridlock in the area, was put out by firefighters from the Alausa Fire Station, who were joined by some church workers.

He said, “The fire started from some refuse being burnt near the containers. It soon engulfed the containers and lasted for about two hours. It attracted sympathisers and passersby to the area. The thick smoke also caused some traffic snarl along Billings Way, Oregun, where the church is located.”

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the incident, adding that the service deployed two fire trucks from the Alausa station in the area. The director noted that no life was lost in the inferno.

He said, “We got the distress call at about 5am. We immediately deployed two fire trucks from the Alausa Station to attend to it. Four containers caught up in the fire contained electrical appliances, pumping machines and pieces of furniture.

“We were able to put the situation under control.”

Police tear-gas Peterside, Abe, others at INEC headquarters

POLICEMEN and operatives of the Department of State Services manning the gates of the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday assaulted the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, and other candidates of the party in the last general elections.

The security agents fired tear-gas canisters at Peterside and 47 other APC candidates in the state elections, who had gone to the head office of INEC to protest an alleged refusal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Mrs. Gesila Khan, to release electoral materials for inspection by the APC, in accordance with the ruling of the Rivers State Election Petitions Tribunal.

A security operative also threatened to shoot a television reporter, who was recording the protest.

The APC candidate is contesting before the tribunal the victory of Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party in the April 11 election in Rivers.

The tribunal had ordered that the petitioners be allowed access to the election materials to enable them to show proof that the polls in the state were rigged.

The candidates, who arrived at the INEC HQ at about 11:15am, lamented that they had individually submitted petitions against Khan’s refusal to make the needed documents available.

Peterside, who led the other candidates during the peaceful protest, wondered why the REC had refused to comply with the order of the tribunal, complaining that the REC had claimed that she was working under instruction from the INEC headquarters.

A petition by the candidates, which was eventually submitted at INEC, read, “It is highly worrisome that the Independent National Electoral Commission, which ought to assume the position of an unbiased umpire, has now thrown caution to the wind and is now hobnobbing with the other respondents in the aforementioned petitions to frustrate the speedy and efficient determination of the petitions.

“The foregoing collaboration and partnership between the commission and other respondents to the petition is confirmed by the commission’s refusal to allow our expert inspect electoral materials, refusal to produce properly Certified True Copies and the series of objections filed by counsel for the commission, challenging the tribunal’s order for inspection of electoral materials.”

Rivers APC candidates who participated in the protest at the INEC headquarters included Senator Magnus Abe, Andrew Uchendu, Otelemaba Amachree, Chidi Lloyd and Victor Amadi, among others.

Rivers APC Chairman, Denis Ikanya, also accompanied the protesters to the commission’s headquarters.

Trouble had started at the INEC office when the security operatives refused to allow all the protesting candidates to personally present their grievances to the acting Chairman of INEC, Mrs. Amina Zakari.

Zakari was said to have instructed that she would only see three of the protesters.

The candidates, on arrival at the INEC headquarters, had been accosted by the security operatives at a checkpoint near the commission’s main entrance.

Our correspondent learnt that Zakari and Khan were inside the INEC premises during the time of the protest.

The Deputy Director of INEC in charge of security, Mr. Victor Egbun, who had been delegated to meet with the protesting candidates at the outer checkpoint, had told them to nominate three persons to represent them at the meeting with the INEC chairperson.

Egbun told the protesters that it was the standard procedure at the commission.

“I plead with you to cooperate with us. Select three people to follow us to our office,” he had said.

But the candidates refused, arguing that they had different cases and complaints to make.

Abe warned that the candidates were running out of time at the tribunal, adding that “this chairman should not be shy to see visitors. We are not up to 50 candidates here; she can see us.”

The candidates were further miffed when the deputy director told them that his boss was with the Rivers State REC and could not see them.

Sensing that they could be denied audience, the protesting candidates, at 11:45, walked towards the commission’s main gate but they were accosted by security operatives, who asked the protesters to turn back.

However, the protesters refused to heed the security order and started chanting, “Shoot us!” “President Buhari must hear this.” “We will refuse to leave.”

By 11:49am, however, the security operatives started firing tear-gas canisters even as the protesting candidates, journalists and other visitors scampered away to safety.

The Director of Security at INEC, Shettima Ngiladi, who had rushed out to see what was happening at the gate, was speaking with the APC state chairman and some candidates when the incident occurred.

Senators reject pay cut recommendation by panel

The Senate on Wednesday suspended consideration of the report of its Finance committee following sharp disagreements among members over the pay cut recommended by the panel.

Our correspondent learnt that the senators during a two-hour deliberation behind closed doors, resolved to reject the reduction of salaries and allowances as recommended by the Senator James Manager’s committee.

The senators, according to one of them who confided in our correspondent, said it was not possible to accept pay cut with other beneficiaries of the N120bn National Assembly annual budget not doing same.

The senator said that his colleagues accordingly resolved to reject the report because the recommendations were not practicable.

Some other senators who also spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity said further consideration of the finance committee report was stepped down because many of their colleagues rejected the contents of the report.

On what transpired at the closed- door session, Senator Matthew Urhoghide (PDP Edo South), said senators told themselves the truth at the session on the need to be very cautious on accepting reduction of salaries and allowances.

Urhoghide said that majority of the senators agreed that “funny allowances” like the monthly N42,000 wardrobe allowance should be cut off completely.

He said, “Yes, as recommended by the committee, all senators agreed that there must be openness in Senate budget and by extension, that of the National Assembly.

“At the same time, many reasoned that why should we further reduce our budget when already, N30bn has been reduced from the traditional 150bn that it used to be for all the seven different organs of the National Assembly.

“All of us have people in our constituencies and financial requests from them keep piling up on a daily basis, the reality of which made steps to be redirected, otherwise, some of us may stop coming here.”

The committee, it was learnt, also recommended the publication of all the payments accruable to each senator on a quarterly basis.

However, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at plenary, explained that “Senate in closed session deliberated on the report of the finance committee but agreed to stand it down for further legislative input.”

Addressing journalists after plenary, Senate spokesperson, Senator Dino Melaye, said further action on the report was put on hold because the senate budget was an integral part of the National Assembly budget being jointly shared by seven bodies.

Melaye said, “The Senate today, in closed-door session, discussed the report of the ad hoc committee on finances of the senate.

“After due deliberations by the senators, we came to the conclusion that since the budget of the Senate is not independent of the budget of the National Assembly, the budget of the House of Representatives is also inclusive.

“We have the management; we have the National Institute for Legislative Studies; we have even the Public Conduct Commission; the National Assembly Civil Service Commission, and over 3, 000 legislative aides, that are beneficiaries of the N120bn annual budget.

“Therefore, we have agreed that we should consult amongst other arms that share the budget of the National Assembly, before we would draw a conclusion on the report.

“So, the resolution is that we are going to interface with the House of Representatives so that we can be on the same page on the report as presented. This is the resolution of the Senate today in a closed-door session.”

Melaye denied reports that the National Assembly had been experiencing cash crunch despite the fact that some senators confirmed last week that they had not received salaries since their inauguration on June 9.

“I am not aware of any cash crunch, and for me, it is news from you, and I don’t think it is true,” he said.

He said that the senators had the power to reduce their own pay just like the President, the Vice President and some governors had done.

Melaye said, “It is the responsibility of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission to stipulate how much you would be paid. But you can sacrifice, as a public officer, to say: I am taking half of my salary, and then taking half back to the treasury.

“It means that it would be returned to the treasury, where it would be used for other developmental programmes.

“We would make wider consultations with the House of Representatives on the report because we have one National Assembly and whatever is going to affect the Senate, the House of Representatives should also be carried along and I am sure that after this consultation we will get back to the public.”

Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Mr. Abdullahi Kaugama as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Jigawa State following the death of the former REC, Alhaji Abdullahi Minkaila, who was burnt to death with other members of his family.

Amosun sacks workers for setting ‘offensive’ exam questions

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has ordered the sacking of six officials of the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, including a secondary school teacher, over alleged offensive examination question.

Those sacked include two Grade Level 17 officers, Mrs. Folashade Oresegun, who was the Director, Education Support Services, and Mr. Rotimi Odunsi, who was the Director, Curriculum Development and Evaluation, and a Grade Level 16 officer, Mr. Majekodunmi Oluwole.

Others are a Grade Level 10 officer, Mr. E.O. Asegbe, a Grade Level 8 officer, Taylor Damilola , and an English Language teacher in Mayflower Secondary School, Ikenne, Mr. Joel Adegbenro.

The sacking of both Oresegun and Odunsi has been converted to compulsory retirement while the four others were summarily dismissed.

Our correspondent gathered that their offence might not be unconnected with a comprehension passage in the English Language examination conducted by the ministry for the Unified Examination in Public Secondary Schools for the third term of the 2014/2015 academic session.

The offensive section was Section C, where the pupils were asked to summarise a comprehension passage on a policy defect on education.

It was alleged that it was considered too critical of the state government.

The section partly read, “There is no arguing about the fact that the government is merely paying lip service to the development of education. It is true that a lot of money is being spent on the education sector but with little or no impact felt by the people, except where we want to deceive ourselves.

“Many schools run by the government, which were formerly known for academic excellence have suddenly lost their prestige and are living on past glories. No wonder, many parents and guardians are threateningly left with only one option, to withdraw their wards from these schools to other ones that are better managed.

“The evidences to show that the government is not doing enough to assist in the development of education are many. Even pupils in both primary and secondary schools can volunteer a good list on their finger tips.

“One of the numerous indications is the government’s inability to pay running cost to schools. The running cost is the token amount per pupil paid to school administrators to run the affairs of the school in a term. This has been neglected to pile up for several academic sessions.

“Another one is the regular poor conduct of terminal examinations. These examinations are not usually conducted as and when due. The government may have one excuse or the other, but real educationists know that appropriate timing is a strong factor in the process of Continuous Assessment (CA) of students. Thus, a situation, where for instance, the first term examination is shifted to second term is an outright departure from the norms and ethics of Continuous Assessment.”

The summary passage was said to have been culled from Jola Adegbenro’s Issues on Education Today.

The governor and some other top government officials were allegedly angry with this section, which they believed made a veiled reference to what obtained in the state.

Consequently, the embattled officials were invited to Abeokuta last week to face a disciplinary panel set up by the state Bureau of Establishment and Training, where they were quizzed.

The state’s Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle, while reacting to the sacking, said the government followed the due process “because the affected officials were given opportunity to defend themselves.”

She said, “I am aware that not all of them were dismissed, some had their appointment terminated and some were compulsorily retired.

“When the issue came up, the state government put in the necessary process, a panel was set up to investigate and based on their recommendations, the state Civil Service Commission has to decide. It is a decision that has been relayed to the affected officers.

“The normal process was that a panel was set up, the report was forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for the civil servants, the Teaching Service Commission, for the teachers.

“The decision was in line with the civil service rule, due process was followed to the latter.”

Mount Zion calls for stiffer sanctions against piracy

Mount Zion Faith Ministries International has called for tougher sanctions for pirates who steal intellectual property of others.

This call was made in Ibadan by the Founder of the Christian Drama Ministries, Evangelist Mike Bamiloye.

He said this while speaking with newsmen as part of activities marking the 30th year anniversary of the Ministries.

According to him, the government should prove it is not in support of piracy by putting a very strong policy in place that would check the menace which threatens the survival of publishing and film industries in the country.

Bamiloye who was flanked by Chairman of Planning Committee, Pastor Deji Adekusibe‎, Evangelist Wole Olaleye, Yemi Adepoju, Elvon Jarrett, Kolade Segun Okeowo‎ and other members of the popular group said, “there has not been a strong policy against piracy in Nigeria.

The Federal Government should evolve strong policy against piracy. The pirates should be identified and the suspects should be punished accordingly. This will serve as a deterrent to other people that may be or want to go into piracy.”

He added that it was unfair for a person to invest millions of naira in producing a movie and before it comes out officially, the movie would be on sale by the roadside.

He said the ministries had been confronted by daunting challenges but the Almighty God is
always there for the group adding that God has used the ministries to train about 3,000 students across the world.

He spoke further that the ministries had produced over 100 movies as at last year noting that about fifteen new ones are yet to be released.

Bamiloye hinted further that the anniversary would run through the month of August.
