Tragedy averted as two FirstNation planes collide at MMA

Tragedy was averted on Friday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 in Lagos following a ground collision of two planes belonging to FirstNation Airways.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a similar incident had occurred at the airport on July 6, following the collision of two planes belonging to Emirates and Hak Air.

NAN gathered that Friday’s incident, which happened at about mid-day, involved two Airbuses 330 conveying about 250 passengers.

The two planes had their bodies partially damaged as a result of the collision.

A source at the airport told NAN that one of the planes was taxiing from the runway to MMA2 to disengage passengers, while the other aircraft was preparing to take off to Port-Harcourt Airport from the same terminal.

The source alleged that the pilot may have been misdirected by the marshals to taxi to the wrong part of the apron.

According to the source, the Port-Harcourt bound aircraft was parked at Gate 4 while the arriving aircraft was bound for the Gate 3 of the terminal.

However, the source claimed that the marshals misdirected the arriving aircraft to the same gate as the parked aircraft which led to their wings brushing each other.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority immediately grounded both aircraft while passengers were asked to disembark by the airline.

NAN further gathered that the refunds of tickets were made to passengers on the Port-Harcourt bound aircraft by the airline.

The NCAA also confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke.

Ndubuoke said no passenger was hurt and that the incident had been referred to the Accident Investigation Bureau for further investigation.

He also reiterated NCAA’s commitment to safety and security of passengers.

State news agency MENA quoted an interior ministry source as saying security forces intervened and arrested 15 armed Muslim Brotherhood members.

Anadolu News Agency reported several protests in the Giza neighbourhoods of al-Haram, Nahra and al-Omraniya following the prayers, adding that security forces responded by firing live bullets.

In the city of Alexandria, in the country’s north, security forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters, sources there told Al Jazeera.

Protests by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood have largely faded under a tough security crackdown, but smaller rallies are held regularly by Egyptians protesting against the coup that removed Morsi from power in 2013.

Brazil ex-president Lula investigated for corruption

Federal prosecutors in Brazil have opened a formal inquiry into possible “influence peddling” by former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The investigation will look into whether Lula improperly used his connections overseas to benefit Latin America’s largest engineering firm, Odebrecht.

In May, prosecutors in the capital Brasilia said they had opened a preliminary investigation into the matter, saying the former leader had frequently travelled abroad at Odebrecht’s expense after leaving office, from 2011 until 2014.

The inquiry announced on Thurday puts the legacy of one of Brazil’s most popular former leaders on the line at a time when some are calling for the impeachment of his chosen successor, President Dilma Rousseff, for alleged campaign finance irregularities.

A spokeswoman for Lula’s institute, the Instituto Lula, said the institute was surprised by the news, and thought the inquiry had been escalated too quickly, the Reuters news agency said. She added that Lula’s travels were completely legal.

In their preliminary inquiry, prosecutors cited media reports that Brazil-based Odebrecht had won contracts in countries including the Dominican Republic and Cuba after Lula met with their leaders, travelling at Odebrecht’s expense.

Lula may have also improperly influenced Luciano Coutinho, president of the state-run development bank BNDES, when it approved loans for Odebrecht projects abroad, prosecutors said.

PDP condemns DSS’ invasion of Dasuki’s residence

The Peoples Democracy Party has condemned the Department of State Services over the invasion and occupation of the residence of a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisah Metuh, said the action of the DSS amounted to a violation of the rights of the former NSA and was contrary to the constitution of the country and the tenets of democracy.

He stressed that the invasion of the residence of the former NSA was unacceptable in a democratic setting.

Metuh made the comment while speaking with journalists at John Kadiya Street, Asokoro, residence of Dasuki in Abuja, on Friday.

The PDP Spokesman was turned back at the gate of Dasuki’s residence by operatives of the commission, who insisted that the residence was under security watch.

Metuh said while Nigerians elected Buhari because they wanted him, the actions of some of his aides were scary to the citizenry as they were taking the country back to the dark days of military dictatorship.

He said, “I came into Abuja today because I read the situation about the invasion of the house of the former NSA and his detention, house arrest and other matters. So I drove to his house as a personal friend to see him and to find out what is happening. Then about seven or eight security operatives came out and they said I cannot see him because the house is under security watch.

“And I asked them: security watch in terms of treason, or in terms of terrorism, or what? I need to know, and they said they are not in a position to say. And why I asked this question is that if it is under security watch, on account of corruption or on account of any other reason, it is totally against the constitution of this country.

“This is a democracy, and the democratic tenets and principles apply. The fact is that we deserve basic freedom, liberties and movements associated with democracy. The truth is that Nigerians are getting scared; we voted for our President, they voted for the President and he was duly elected. Nigerians wanted him, Nigerians voted for him, and now he is the father of the nation, he is the father of everyone, he is not serving any other interest.

“But there are certain activities, as it is happening now, by some of his aides and people around him. It is like they are taking us back to the military era. The last time this happened was under the military.”

He urged the Federal Government to stop treating those who served in the last administration under President Goodluck Jonahan as prisoners of war.

He said what the PDP lost was an election and not a war.

He called on the government to ensure that those suspected to have committed any act against the laws of the country were handled according to the stipulations of the law.

“There has never been any situation where people would be held against their will. It is completely against his fundamental human rights and we should be careful here. We should be very careful because this is how it started in Zimbabwe, this is how it started in other countries.

“Before you know it, we have a dictatorship, you cannot scare us, we are not guilty because we served under a former President, we are not guilty because we lost an election, we are not losers in a war. We lost an election, not a war, we are not prisoners of war and we should not be treated like prisoners of war.

“What we demand is respect, there is the rule of law, we will not condone corrupt activities or any other illegal or unlawful act,” he added.
