NOLLYWOOD: BUHARI ORDERS CLAMPDOWN ON PIRATES

Security operatives in Nigeria have been directed by President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure piracy in Nollywood is defeated.

The President gave this order on Tuesday in Abuja after receiving a briefing from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan and her directors at the Presidential Villa.

He stressed that artiste must start to enjoy the fruits of their labour and ordered law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in curbing the menace.

Buhari charged security officials to fish out perpetrators of copyright piracy, their sponsors and collaborators, and bring them to justice.

“Nollywood is making progress. We should work with them. Unless they are backed, they will be ruined by pirates who want to reap where they have not sowed. They have built an industry with their own sweat. It is, therefore, incumbent on us to give them the necessary support,” the President was quoted to have said.

This news will surely excite entertainers in Nigeria, who have slammed government for allowing piracy to thrive in the country. Also, the fears being earlier nursed by Nollywood practitioners of being neglected by this administration has been allayed.

The past government of Goodluck Jonathan heavily supported the showbiz industry through grants.

EMEKA IKE KEEPS MUM ON RUMOURED DIVORCE SAGA

Despite viral reports that the marriage of controversial actor, Emeka Ike is on the brink of collapse, he stayed mum on the issue.

Last week, reports went viral that the wife of the actor, Emma, had filed a suit in a customary court seeking to dissolve her marriage over alleged domestic violence.

Even several calls made by us to Emeka Ike’s phone number to get his reaction on the issue were not answered or returned.

We also went ahead to send a message to him notifying him why we wanted to get in touch with him, but he refused to respond to it.

Emeka Ike and his wife have been married for over a decade.

She reportedly told the court that, “It was when my husband beat me mercilessly I believed that people truly saw stars whenever they were unconscious. It was my brother who took me to the hospital where I spent two months.

“There was also a day I was feeding our last child with tea, my husband, out of anger took the tea and poured it on my head.”

She was further quoted in the reports to have said, “Each time we fight, he calls me a witch saying whenever he intends to start a project and he informs me it eventually fails. He also said if he hadn’t married me, I would have become a prostitute.

“Since I left, he doesn’t allow me to speak with our first two children asking me to come home if I really want to see them. Even when I was in with him, he leaves home for months on the pretext of different appointments. I can’t face all this anymore. I need help.”

They Were Promised A Good Future, All They Got Was Bondage And Child Labour

Around 30 bonded labourers, including children, belonging to the Irula tribal community were rescued on Monday from a man who had engaged them to collect earthworms in Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district.

5 years of bondage

The labourers, who were in bondage for more than five years, were rescued by revenue district officials and police based on a tip-off given by a non-governmental organization. Most of them hail from a village near Kalpakkam.

Officials said the man who employed them had loaned 10,000 to each family and made them work for over five years to "repay the loan". Promised daily wages, all they got was child labour and exploitation"

They were promised daily wages. But their employer instead exploited them and threatened to file a false complaint against them if they tried to leave," revenue district officer M Narayanan, who was part of the rescue team, said in Ponneri.  The youngest of the labourers was seven years old.

"When we went to the spot, we found them working, covered in mud," he said. The labourers were made to work in Ooranambedu in Minjur, Venadu in Andhra Pradesh and Madugal kuppam in Gummidipoondi.
The earthworms were sold to local prawn hatcheries. Officials are on the look-out for the man who engaged them. An FIR has been filed.

No longer able to work without pay, the workers have however concluded plans to hit the streets of Lagos to carry out a demonstration in protest of their unpaid salaries.

Indian Celebrity Snake Rescuer, Snake Shyam, Hit With Case Of Cruelty Against His Snakes

Celebrity snake rescuer-cum-corporator from Mysore, Snake Shyam, is in the dock as a complaint is lodged against him with the state forest department and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).

He is accused of obsession with live snake shows on television and schools subjecting the reptiles, protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act (IWPA), to extreme shock and stress, while they are supposed to be released in conducive habitat immediately after a rescue.

M S Balasubramaniam aka Snake Shyam's awareness stints of displaying live snakes listed under schedule II of the IWPA, amounts to illegal confinement, transportation and display, and has been cited as such in the complaint dated July 12, seeking action against him.

"The consequences of using live snakes in school and TV shows are well known to Snake Shyam. Despite this, he goes around doing just that. While we appreciate the conservation efforts of the popular snake catcher, we have chronically failed to communicate to him the blunder he commits each time he is on electronic media displaying live snakes, and the wrong message it gives out to the innocent and ignorant public," the complaint states.

Those who have taken up the issue claim that twenty-one species of snakes like cobra and rat snake displayed by Shyam at various forums are listed in schedule II of IWPA.

"To rescue and release snakes in a conducive habitat is an important aspect of wildlife conservation. Displacement of a rescued animal is a sensitive issue and could have serious implications on the rescued animal.

In this case, they are stocked in improper housing, transported unscientifically and exposed to heavy lights in studios causing them a lot of stress. So are school exhibitions. Reptiles are extremely prone to stress. These acts cause extreme stress and shock that could even kill them," revealed honorary wildlife warden, Sharath R Babu.

Forest brass view

"The issue had come to our notice even in the past and we had asked him to release rescued animals in conducive habitats immediately after their rescue. It is not right to exhibit animals in TV shows or schools. However, we will issue a notice again asking him not to conduct such shows with animals as live exhibits," V Karikala, DCF, Mysuru told Bangalore Mirror.

Snake Shyam says"I have been rescuing snakes since 1980. Because of my awareness programmes, many snakes are being spared. Because of the awareness I have been creating, even children think of rescuing snakes instead of killing them. That's the change I have brought in. I could even create awareness with pictures. If I do so, those spotting snakes can't distinguish between. I'm not doing any business out of this. I'm not making money out of it. I'm only trying to create awareness and educate people with live snakes. I later release them in their habitat as ordered by the former CCF. If my service is a problem to anybody, then I will stop," he said.

Stampede kills dozens at India festival

At least 27 people, mostly women, died in a stampede at a riverside religious festival in southern India, a senior official said.

More than 40 people were injured in the crush that occurred on Tuesday morning in Rajahmundry, a major city in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Thousands of people gather during a Hindu religious bathing festival on the bank of the Godavari River in the Andhra Pradesh state on July 14.
The festival, called Pushkaram or Pushkaralu in the Telugu language, is a 12-day Hindu bathing festival dedicated to river worship.

Arun Kumar, the chief of the district where the stampede took place, said there were "inadequate arrangements" for the crowds of worshippers surging at a river bank for a holy dip.

A woman is rushed to a hospital on a stretcher after the stampede.
There was a sudden rush of some 100,000 pilgrims at one bank that was equipped to handle only a third of them, he said.

"There was chaos at the entrance. And suddenly there was this stampede," Kumar told CNN.

According to Hindu astrology, the festival happens once in 144 years.

For believers, a dip into the sacred Godavari river during this period cleanses them of their sins.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences to the victim's families on Twitter.

Teenage girl survives plane crash

Autumn Veatch, 16, couldn't tell the 911 operator where in the Washington state wilderness the small plane went down. Somehow, she survived; her grandparents apparently didn't.

On Wednesday, search crews will make their way toward a suspected crash site. They spotted wreckage a day earlier around where Autumn walked out of the woods near Mazama, but they were unable to reach it then or identify it, said Barbara LaBoe, spokeswoman for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Autumn hiked out of the rugged North Cascades Mountains on Monday, covered in burns and bruises, police said. That was two days after the crash.

Her injuries were not life-threatening, and late Tuesday, she was released from Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster, said hospital spokeswoman Melanie Neddo. Video from CNN affiliate KXLY showed her arriving at her Bellingham home.

'Only one that made it out'

After walking out of the woods, Autumn flagged down a passing motorist, who drove her to a store in Mazama, near the Canadian border. The man called police before handing Autumn the phone.

"So tell me exactly what happened," the dispatcher told the girl, according to a transcript of the call.

"I was riding from Kalispell, Montana, to Bellingham, Washington, and ... well, I don't know where, but we crashed and I was the only one that made it out," Autumn said calmly and in a low voice.

"Made it out from the collision?"

"From the plane," she said.

"Or survived?"

"Yeah, the only one that survived."

"Are you injured at all?"

"Yeah, I have a lot of burns on my hands, and I'm ... kind of covered in bruises and scratches and stuff."

Struggling with loss

Autumn was flying with her grandparents, Leland and Sharon Bowman, in a small private plane when it apparently ran into trouble.

Jessica Jerwa, a spokeswoman for the Washington Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, told CNN she called Autumn's father, David, with news of her survival.

"It was incredible for me to be able to give that information," she said. "I have a 16-year-old son myself."

David Veatch had been napping at the time.

"He was still a little sleepy when I told him that Autumn walked out and that she was safe," Jerwa recalled. "He just sort of paused and took a moment, and then just went, 'What?'"

Autumn's friend Chelsey Clark said the girl slept part of the day but seemed to be in good condition.

"It is a miracle what happened. We never gave up hope and we just felt like she was still with us," Clark said. "It's absolutely amazing to see her in good spirits."

But Autumn is struggling with the loss, Veatch told CNN affiliate KCPQ.

"These people were really playing the part of grandparents to her and that's hitting her really hard," he said.

He added, "I believe in God. ... There's no way I cannot believe in God."

The 1949 Beech A35 aircraft, registered to Leland Bowman, dropped off the radar near Omak, Washington, just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, according to authorities. It had taken off from western Montana around 1 p.m.

Hiking for help in cold wilderness

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers recounted the teen's story of survival.

"Autumn said they flew out of the clouds, and then flew into the side of a mountain. She was able to get out," Rogers said.

The girl found a creek and followed it.

"At first she was nervous, she said, and she was scared," the sheriff told CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront. "She followed it all the way for two days, spending the night along the river there once."

She eventually found a highway, where she was rescued.

7-year-old survives plane crash that kills 4 in Kentucky

The sheriff told CNN affiliate KCPQ that Autumn's survival was miraculous.

"It gets cold up there at night, pretty high elevations, so she survived not only the crash, then going through that. I will just tell you this from all of us here -- we are just impressed with her, she's like a kind of superhero."

Autumn developed rhabdomyolysis, a muscle disorder, during her ordeal, but suffered no life-threatening injuries, said Scott Graham, chief executive of Three Rivers Hospital. Rhabdomyolysis is often caused by an injury that damages skeletal muscle, according to the National Library of Medicine. Fibers from the damaged muscle enter the bloodstream and can cause kidney damage, but recovery is possible with treatment.

She was also extremely dehydrated and exhausted.

Tried to help grandparents

Veatch told the Bellingham Herald that his daughter tried to help her grandparents out of the plane but couldn't. She waited for rescuers near the crash site for about a day, crying, the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Rogers, the sheriff, told CNN that Autumn reached into the aircraft and tried to grab her grandparents to pull them out. That's how she got burned, he said. The plane was on fire.

The girl drank from a creek, but not too much because she was afraid of getting sick, the sheriff said.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Lustick of the Civil Air Patrol told KCPQ the searchers were "overjoyed" when they learned Autumn had survived.

"It's a miracle when you have a plane crash of this type," he said. "It's a rarity to have someone come out of this and be able to walk out of a crash scene."

Google alters disputed China map

Google says it has altered its map of a disputed reef in the South China Sea, removing its Chinese name in favor of what it says is its internationally recognized moniker.

Google changed the name to Scarborough Shoal after objections from people living in the Philippines. A petition posted on Change.org said Google Maps had identified the territory as part of China's Zhongsha Islands.

The shoal, which Filipinos call Panatag, is part of a number of islands and reefs in the area being claimed by several countries, including the Philippines.

"We made the fix in line with our long-standing global policy on depicting disputed regions in a way that does not endorse or affirm the position taken by any side," a Google spokesperson said.

The move has not gone down well with some Chinese Internet users.

"My patriotic fellow countrymen, please check your phones and computers and uninstall the Google products, kicking Google out of China," said one user of Weibo, China's equivalent to Twitter.

It's also not the first time Google has embroiled itself in a territorial dispute.

In 2010, a Nicaraguan general cited Google's version of the border map as a justification of a reported raid of a disputed area between that country and Costa Rica.

Last year, China stepped up land reclamation on several reefs in contested waters, alarming its Asian neighbors.

The United States says that China has reclaimed some 2,000 acres -- 1,500 football fields -- in the past 18 months and has called for an "immediate and lasting" halt to the island building.

On Tuesday, China urged the Philippines to abandon its attempt to resolve territorial disputes in South China Sea at an international tribunal. Instead, it said it wants direct negotiation.

The Philippines had asked the tribunal in The Hague to declare most of China's claims to the South China Sea invalid, but China has refused to participate, saying it doesn't have jurisdiction.

Operating under the U.N. Convention of the Law of the Sea, the tribunal on Monday finished a week-long hearing to address China's contention.

Half of Earth 'could freeze by 2030'

Scientists have made a discovery about the sun's "heartbeat" that they say indicates that Earth's Northern Hemisphere could experience a deep freeze in 15 years.

The sun has a "solar heartbeat," or cycle of activity, that produces energy that causes sunspots and solar flares. Scientists at Northumbria University in northeast England developed a model that illustrates the history of these heartbeats and that predicts there will be irregularities in them. The model suggests that solar activity will fall by 60% during the 2030s.

According to the Royal Astronomical Society, the researchers studied the sun's magnetic field activity between 1976 and 2008. They compared their predictions with average sunspot numbers, another strong marker of solar activity, the society reported.

The researchers' model showed a 97% level of accuracy, said Valentina Zharkova, a Northumbria University mathematics professor.

So how cold could it get?

The scientists say their findings could mean a deep freeze like the one Great Britain experienced around 1900, when the Thames River froze over.

CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller says the study looks intriguing, but it has not been peer reviewed, or subjected to the scrutiny of the larger scientific community.

"This isn't published research yet," he said. "Our ability to forecast the specifics of a solar cycle is incredibly poor. It's worse than forecasting in a hurricane season."

Doug Biesecker, who works at the Space Weather Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colorado, agrees with Miller.

He said the research shouldn't give anyone the idea that because the weather may cool, climate change is not something to be worried about.

"It's a very complicated issue," Biesecker, an expert in solar physics, told CNN. "Does the sun have a role in our variable climate? Yes. Is the dominant role? No. Even the concept of the sun being responsible for Europe's mini ice age -- it's not hard-and-fast true."

Bottom line: The research needs a closer look.

Desmond Tutu admitted to hospital with infection

Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu is being treated in a hospital for a persistent infection, his representatives said.

The 84-year-old, who has wrestled with health problems for years, was admitted to the hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, on Tuesday.

His family hopes he will be able to return home in a day or two, said the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, one of the archbishop's daughters.

Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end apartheid in his native South Africa, has remained active well into his 80s with the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation and other organizations.

He previously underwent hospital tests for a persistent infection in 2013.

Last year, he canceled travel plans because of his long-running battle with prostate cancer.

Ashwini Waskar, India's First Female Competitive Bodybuilder, Breaks Barriers

Just two years ago, Ashwini Waskar was a simple women with simple needs. Her first need for a gym arose when she was getting fat. In the space of one year, the 32-year-old underwent a dramatic transformation. So much so, that she is India's first competitive female bodybuilder. This is the inspirational story of Waskar.

Hailing from Raigad in Konkan, Maharashtra, Waskar completed her post graduation in fisheries and in 2009, she arrived in Mumbai to become a senior research fellow at the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. It was during her stay in Mumbai where her passion for fitness grew.

Speaking to The Mirror, a UK-based paper, she said, "While working I was becoming really overweight, so to maintain my fitness level I joined a gym in 2012. Out of enthusiasm, I used to lift heavy weights and I followed a rich protein diet. That’s how my body became really strong."

n 2013, she attended a male bodybuilding competition and it captivated her. In that event, there was an announcement which gave her the boost to pursue this sport. "An announcement was being made there about the upcoming first national level female bodybuilding competition and they were asking if anybody wants to participate. So I thought 'why not give it a try?" When she visited her hometown in 2013, she went to Hanuman Vyayamshala, a local gym and it was here where the gym's owner Rajesh Angad was astounded to see her perform the same routines as male bodybuilders.

Angad informed her about a bodybuilding event in Pune and asked her to participate. There was one problem. The attire of bodybuilders was too revealing for her conservative parents to allow. "I told my father about my desire to participate and the attire. He said that he would let me know his decision the next day," Aswhini recalled. "To my surprise, he consented. He said there was nothing wrong in exposing your body for a sport that demands contestants to be similarly attired."

Her father agreed to support his daughter’s training and participation costs. In her first event in December 2014, Ashwini came in fifth position, a wonderful achievement for a beginner. Sadly, despite all the hard work and participation in seven international competitions, Ashwini has not managed to find any sponsors except her father. For an event in Mumbai, she had to sell her gold chain as her food supplements cost her Rs 20,000 per month.

Despite lack of sponsorship, Ashwini continues to be positive. She says she sees a bright future for women's bodybuilding. "Girls are coming into bodybuilding and some women are being inclined towards fitness. “I would really love to train a girl who comes up to me with a wish of participating in competitions." Despite braving the odds, she has come a long way and she deserves all the recognition. A big salute to Ashwini Waskar's spirit.

13-Year-Old Kid Beaten To Death in Bangladesh

Protesters took to the streets across Bangladesh on Tuesday to demand death penalty for the killers of a 13-year-old boy as anger mounted over the sickening lynching of the boy which was captured on video and then went viral.

Bangladeshi police have now arrested five people over the July 8 killing of Samiul Alam Rajon, who was tied to a pole and then subjected to a brutal assault in which he pleaded for his life. One of those arrested was detained in Saudi Arabia after outraged members of the large Bangladeshi expat community there shopped him to police.

The 28-minute video of Samiul, which was widely circulated after being posted on social media, has prompted deep soul-searching among Bangladeshis. It has also led to a series of mass protests.  Hundreds of people demonstrated at the scene of the murder in Samiul's home city of Sylhet on Tuesday morning demanding that the killers be sent to the gallows. "Protesters held hands at the site of the murder. They were demanding execution for the killers," local police chief Akhter Hossain said.

A new mass demonstration has been called for Tuesday afternoon in the centre of the city in the country's northeast. Protests were also held in the capital Dhaka where hundreds shouted "Hang them, hang them" as they massed outside the national press club, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

The police responds to public outrage

Although executions are rare in Bangladesh, several Islamist leaders have been hanged in recent months over their role in the 1971 independence war. Thousands of demonstrators held similar protests on Monday, venting their anger at police for not doing enough to hunt down the killers. Samiul was accused by his attackers of stealing a bicycle although his family insist that the youngster was innocent. Police said officers had arrested three people overnight, including the wife of one of the suspects and two men who were at the scene. A court remanded one of them to five days in custody.

Police were also hunting for "two others who directly took part" in the beating, police chief Hossain said. "It's a brutal and heinous murder and we won't spare anyone," he added. The latest arrests bring the number of people in custody to five, including the alleged ringleader Muhit Alam and his main accomplice Kamrul Islam who was arrested in Saudi Arabia, according to Bangladesh's foreign ministry.

Horrifying injuries

Islam fled to Jeddah in the immediate aftermath of the attack but reports said he was arrested by the Saudi authorities after members of the large Bangladeshi expat community in Jeddah reported him to police. In a video filmed by an expat TV station as he was led away to a waiting police car in handcuffs, Islam said that he had "made a mistake, please forgive me," before bursting into tears.

An autopsy on Samiul found 64 separate injuries had been inflicted on the teenager during the assault in which he could be seen begging for water. In the video, the terrified youngster can be heard screaming in pain and repeating: "Please don't beat me like this, I will die."

Samiul's attackers can be heard on the footage trying to force him to confess his involvement in the theft. At one stage he is told to walk away. But as he tries to get to his feet, one of the attackers shouts: "His bones are okay. Beat him some more."

It is not clear who filmed the video although police initially said they believed it was captured on smart phone by one of the attackers. Police said dozens of people witnessed the murder but none tried to stop the killers or report the incident to police.

"It's unfortunate that none of them came to us. Some 20-25 people witnessed the horrible crime and and they did nothing," deputy commissioner of Sylhet police Faisal Mahmud said.
