WAEC to withhold 19 states results over debts

Hundreds of candidates who sat for the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination may not have their results released in the next two weeks, the West African Examinations Council has announced.

No fewer than 19 states of the federation owe the council about N4bn examination registration fees.

The WAEC Head of National Office, Lagos, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced this on Monday at a briefing in Lagos.

He, however, failed to make public the affected states.

Eguridu said, “A total number of 19 states in the country owe the Council in respect of entry fees for state government sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE. Some states also still owe the Council registration fees for the May/June 2014 WASSCE.

“We have written to the affected state governments without any response. The poor response of the debtor states is threatening the smooth operations of the Council.

“We, therefore, want to publicly plead with the affected states to off-set the registration fees of their candidates as soon as possible, as we cannot guarantee that the results of their candidates for the May/June 2015 will be released along with others.”

20 killed at Afghanistan wedding

At least 20 people have been killed by gunmen who opened fire at a wedding in Afghanistan’s north, officials said.

The attack, apparently linked to a feud between two families, happened in the Andarab district of Baghlan province on Sunday night. One family was hosting a wedding as members of a rival family arrived and started shooting at male guests, sources told Al Jazeera.

The bride and groom survived the attack.

Most of the dead were wedding guests aged from 14 years old to 60 years old, Jaweed Basharat, the governor of Baghlan province, told the AP news agency. He said 10 people were also injured.

The remote district, with little government presence, has witnessed frequent family disputes over land and other issues, Al Jazeera’s Qais Azimy said. Deaths in such disputes are reported almost every month but the number of casualties at the wedding was unusually high.

Police has sent reinforcement to the area, but gunfire was still reported there on Monday morning.

Fatal gun fights and celebratory gun fire are common at Afghan weddings, which have boomed in recent years in a country battered by nearly 40 years of war.

Afghan soldiers fired mortars at a wedding party in late December in the southern province of Helmand, killing 17 women and children.

Leave Me Alone and Face Your Marriages, Afrocandy Warns Pastors

Queen of nudity, Afrocandy has asked pastors to leave her alone and stop sending her DM’s just because they want her to change her lifestyle.

According to her, there is nothing wrong with her and she praises and worships God like every other person. She took to her Facebook page to vent her anger. Her words:

"Before you enter my inbox telling me to repent and preaching to me how Jesus loves me and died for me please look me well. I am a Christian, I praise and worship my God and his son Jesus Christ always, and I know they love me, protect, provide for me and my children, you don't need to tell me.

Some people even take the pain to register at my websites, spend time looking at all the naked people before starting their preaching. Let me warn you, my new approach to get you off my pages now is to message your wives to come get you out of my pages since blocking does not make much impact anymore, when you get to your wives you can explain to them how my websites or pages look like Churches.

So my advice to y'all is to take your hungry selves and go preach to Boko haram since you seriously want to preach...Rubbish!"

Policemen Assault Pregnant Woman, Cause Her To Lose Baby In Lagos

Three policemen who assaulted an eight-month pregnant woman in Lagos are currently undergoing orderly room trial, the Lagos State Police Command said on Saturday.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, who made the disclosure to NAN, said they were arrested on Tuesday after a complaint about their alleged human rights infringement.

He said the law would take its cause on any member of the police force that committed any crime, particularly human rights abuse but did not disclose the names of the policemen.

NAN learnt that the woman lost her pregnancy after the assault.

Sources had told NAN that the woman, Chika Elekawachi had complication as a result of the assault.

“The policemen were said to have sprayed tear gas on the woman in her car following an argument arising from the gridlock on the road.

“She was rushed to one Safe Hands Hospital at Old Ojo Road, Amuwo Odophin where she was allegedly operated upon but the baby died less than 48 hours later.

“Apparently the gas she inhaled resulted in the complication and the subsequent surgery.

“The three policemen in question are attached to the Satelite Town Police Division,” the sources said.

Soyinka is a better 'wine taster' than a political critic - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has repeated once again that Professor Wole Soyinka is more of a successful aparo (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic. He repeated it on a programme tagged ‘Book Club’ on Channels. It will be recalled that in his book, My Watch, the former president had said;

“For Wole, no one can be good, nor can anything be spot-on politically except that which emanates from him or is ordained by him. His friends and loved ones will always be right and correct no matter what they do or fail to do. He is surely a better wine connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic.”

The professor however replied him last year December, shortly after the book went public, in a piece titled ‘Watch And Pray, Watch And Prey’, where he vehemently protested the description of him, calling Obasanjo an expert liar, who lies to boost his ego.

But repeating what he had earlier said, Obasanjo in the interview said;

“Wole Soyinka is a gifted man. I have always acknowledged that but he is a bad politician and I have also always said that; and that is my own point of view. He may agree with it, he may not agree with it.

“But having said that, I also, in my book, bring out Wole Soyinka as I see him and that’s my own judgment; that’s my own perspective of him. He may agree, he may not agree but anybody can bring out his own perspective of me.

“For instance, I know that if I want somebody to give me the best wine, one of the people I will go to is Wole Soyinka and I know he has a taste for good wine and I said that in the book.”

We insist homosexuality is wrong - Catholic Archbishop

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan today said the position of the Catholic Church in Nigeria against homosexuality remains the same.

Onaiyekan made this statement to journalists in Makurdi during his official visit to the Diocese of Makurdi yesterday.

“Unfortunately, we are living in a world where these things have now become quite acceptable but for the fact that they are acceptable doesn’t mean that they are right. The Catholic Church considers itself as carrying the banner of the truth in the World that has allowed itself to be so badly deceived.

“Even if people don’t like us for it, our church has always said homosexuality is unnatural and marriage is between a man and a woman. There is no such thing as marriage between two men or marriage between two women, whatever they do among themselves should not be called marriage. There is no question of the Catholic Church changing its positions on this matter,” he said.

Buhari’s US trip fruitless - PDP

Precisely 59 days after President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday listed many ‘sins’ the Federal Government under the President had committed and said Buhari’s government lacked direction.

Among the sins of the Buhari’s government, the PDP said, included alleged failure by the President to achieve anything meaningful during his just-concluded US trip and alleged maltreatment of Patience, wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

At a media briefing in Abuja on Sunday, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said events after Buhari’s visit to the US indicated that neither the President nor his party, the All Progressives Congress, had learnt anything from the trip.

Metuh said, “Now that the visit has come and gone, our fear is that nothing whatsoever has been learnt or gained.

“What we continue to receive as a nation have been embarrassing disagreements, accusations and counter-accusations, blames and denials on very important issues due to lack of tact and skill in the management of state matters by the APC-led administration.

“It is disheartening that rather than secure any sort of tangible gain for the fight against terrorism, which has lost steam under the APC watch, with insurgents, who were pushed to the verge of surrender by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, now surging back and spreading into the country, we get nothing but exchanges and disagreements between the Presidency and their American hosts.

“This is not only embarrassing but also a worrisome indication of crass ineptitude in the handling of international affairs on the part of the present administration.”

He urged the government to settle down and face the business of governance and the fight against insurgency with every sense of seriousness, especially given Buhari’s promise in his April 2, 2015 CNN interview to end the scourge two months after his inauguration.

Reacting, the All Progressives Congress, said that the PDP would be unable to provide any worthwhile opposition to the Federal Government if its spokesman continued to issue empty statements.

‘’Today’s statement is the most tortuous yet by the PDP and, honestly, sounds more like a compendium of beer parlour gossips and side talks than a serious criticism of a sitting government,’’ the APC said in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

‘‘To be in opposition does not mean you have to constitute yourself to a nuisance by rushing to the press with all sorts of hot air statements. It is the quality, rather than the frequency, of your interventions that makes you relevant as an opposition in a democracy,’’ the party said

Metuh meanwhile also criticised the statement made by the President while in the USA, in which he was quoted as saying that he would administer the country on the basis of the voting pattern in the last general elections.

He also said that the business community in Nigeria and across the world noted what he described as the disgraceful treatment allegedly meted out to some Nigerian bankers and captains of industries by Buhari during his US visit.

While agreeing that the President has the right to decide those to be on his entourage on such an important official visit, he nevertheless said that the way Buhari allegedly shamed and walked out Nigerian businessmen had sent a wrong signal to international investors and posed great threats to inflow of direct foreign investments into the country.

“These Nigerian businessmen were rejected by their President only for them to be valued by other Presidents of African nations who led them into a meeting with President Barrack Obama in their own countries on account of their investments in those nations,” he added.

Metuh also said that his party noted the alleged embarrassment caused by the absence of an economic team for healthy and informed discussion at the meeting with officials of the US government.

He said that whereas President Obama came to the meeting with a formidable team of experts and key federal officials, President Buhari had in his entourage some APC governors, who, he said, owe salaries and billions of naira in debts.

This action, he said, robbed the nation the benefits and gains of the discussions.

Metuh said that since the President had insisted on running his government as a sole administrator, making important decisions on national affairs without recourse to relevant statutory arms and organs of government, the PDP was being compelled to demand that the administration publish its expenses since assumption of office in May, in keeping with its much harped stance on transparency.

“We make this demand because since the APC took office, the nation’s financial system in the absence of statutory functionaries has been enmeshed in confusion, controversy and fertile atmosphere for financial sleazes,” he added.

Metuh also alleged that his party was in possession of information that the Presidency acting alone, has gone into discussions with the World Bank for a loan of $2.1 bn for purposes unknown to Nigerians.

He asked, “What is the loan for? What are the terms and who are those working the papers? Who are the people to decide on how the money will be spent? Is it true that the $2.1bn loan is meant to pay back huge contributions for the APC Presidential campaign expenses?

“If truly this government is transparent, it should come out clear on this loan as well as publicise details of its expenditure in the last two months.”

The opposition party’s spokesperson also condemned what he called the recent humiliation of Patience Jonathan at the Port Harcourt airport, where he said the ex-President’s wife was refused access to the protocol lounge based on “an order from Abuja”.

He said this was not the case when Jonathan was in power, during which he said all former Presidents and their spouses had unhindered access to the protocol lounge.

Metuh refused to take questions after the briefing.

We are behind Toyin Saraki’s probe - Kwara State PDP

PDP Kwara State Chapter says its behind the invitation of the state's ex-first lady and wife of Senate President Toyin Saraki by the EFCC.

In a statement released yesterday,  July 26th, the state chapter said it had earlier petitioned the anti-graft agency over Mrs Saraki's alleged involvement in corrupt activities with some government officials during her husband's administration as governor of Kwara state.

The party in the statement said Mrs Saraki's arrest and detention is long overdue.

"It has become imperative to inform the members of the public that we have every reasons to believe that a petition recently submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kwara state chapter, is largely responsible for the invitation and eventual criminal prosecution of the former Kwara First Lady and wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki.

It will be recalled that our party had sometimes early this year discreetly submitted a petition to the EFCC detailing how certain individuals in high places under the past administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki milked the state dry and left the people more impoverished than they met them.

In the said petition, we carefully chronicled how state officials, including former First Lady, Toyin Saraki; former Special Adviser to the Governor on MDGs, Mr. Ope Saraki; Personal Assistant (PA) to ex-Governor Bukola Saraki, one Mr. Abdul Adama from Kogi state; a former Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, all working in a ring, got enmeshed in a cesspool of corruption unprecedented in the history of Kwara State or any other state of the federal for that matter!

Although, we believe that the arrest and prosecution of Mrs. Toyin Saraki is long overdue, we nevertheless take solace under the fact that the long arm of the law seems to have finally caught up with her and her cronies.

We are particularly delighted that our painstaking efforts at chronicling the monumental heist that defined the eight years, almost uneventful rule of former Governor Bukola Saraki in Kwara, has not gone unnoticed. We therefore commend the EFCC for its resourcefulness and painstakingness.

We pledge our cooperation with the EFCC and all other relevant anti-graft agencies to ensure that all those who knowingly looted our collective patrimony, but now walking the streets of Kwara free with their ill-gotten wealth, do not go unpunished.
“We urge the anti-graft agency not to buckle in to pressure or blackmail that is already being mounted by political jobbers over Mrs. Saraki’s invitation by the EFCC.

Instead of sponsoring paid activist-for-hire to stampede the EFCC out of the prosecution, one would have thought that the most moral thing for Toyin Saraki and her handlers to do now is to allow the law to take its cause.

Since the duo of Ope Saraki and Tunji Morounfoye are already standing trial for their crimes, one would expect Mrs. Saraki too to seize the moment and clear her name, instead of playing to the gallery.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we reiterate that the offences Mrs. Saraki is being accused of are criminal in nature and such offences are not known to be statute-barred. Therefore, the fact that it took over five years after Mrs. Saraki left office as Kwara First Lady before she is eventually brought before the law does not matter.

“What matters is that justice is ultimately served, especially for the sake of the hard-working Kwara civil servants, poor Kwara farmers and the promising children of Kwara who were and are still being subjected to all manners of deprivations as a result of the rapaciousness of a privileged few who could not contain the temptations to stare clear the cookie jar.”

Three men arrested for diverting N40m USAID drugs

The Police in Lagos State have arrested 3 suspected thieves, Emmanuel Onyike, 51; Alabi Daudu, 68; and Paul Aina, 58 for  allegedly diverting a container loaded with pharmaceutical drugs, valued at N40m, to the Igando area of the state.

It was gathered that the suspects were apprehended by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad attached to Zone 2, on Saturday, July 18.

According to the Police, the container, which belonged to the United States Agency for International Development, was heading for a warehouse of the Society for Family Health in Sango Ota, Ogun State.

It was, however, hijacked and diverted by the suspects to a secluded warehouse in Igando, where the suspects reportedly planned to sell the contents.
Our correspondent gathered that about 500 cartons of drugs, which the container was conveying, had been recovered by the police.

It was learnt that other members of the syndicate, identified only as Ikechukwu, Babawale, Shola and Alhaji, were still at large.

Daudu, a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, said, “Babawale was a friend, and he was the one who brought the deal. He told me he had some goods, and I should get him a truck to convey them. I knew it was stolen goods, but I did not know they were USAID drugs.

“We drove from the Tin Can Port to an area in Igando. Babawale deceived me that the truck contained household batteries. He did not let the three of us know the warehouse.

“This is the fourth operation I would be participating in. I was arrested by the SARS, Ikeja, on a case of diverting roofing sheets. I got N1.8m from the operation. I got N2m from the second. I cannot remember the third. But now, I am repentant. I have grandchildren.”

Also, Aina from Itapa, Ekiti State, and father of six children, said Daudu lured him into the act, adding that his own role was to get buyers for the goods.

He said, “I knew Daudu when we were selling clothes in Isolo. He told me there was a business he wanted us to do together. I did not have money. It was poverty that forced me to agree to the deal. The plan was to take the products to a buyer. I was asked to provide some of the buyers. I made a mistake. I don’t want to go to jail.”

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 Command, Joseph Mbu, said investigations were ongoing to apprehend others who are still at large.”

Bobbi Kristina's boyfriend, Nick Gordon, on suicide watch

Now that Bobbi Kristina Brown has passed away, her longtime boyfriend and rumored husband, Nick Gordon, is inconsolable.

It has been reported that he’s “out of control” and those closest to him fear he’ll take his own life.

“Nick is on suicide watch. He is out of control with regret and sadness. He keeps saying that if only Bobbi Kristina had heard his voice, things would have been different. She may have lived,” a source said.

Nick, who was recently served with a $10 million lawsuit by Bobbi Kristina Brown’s conservators is inconsolable over the death of the 22-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown.

Bobbi Kristina Brown dies; her boyfriend to be charged for murder

Bobbi Kristina Brown has died aged 22 - six months after she was found unconscious in a bathtub.

The aspiring singer was rushed to hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma on January 31 after she was discovered face-down in the water-filled tub at her townhouse in Roswell, Georgia.

She passed away, surrounded by her family, at the hospice on Sunday - just 3 years after her famous mother, singer Whitney Houston, died aged 48 in a bathtub at a hotel in Beverly Hills.

Officials are planning to treat the death of Bobbi Kristina, who was found in the tub with bruises on her face and body, swollen lips and a missing tooth, as a murder investigation.

The person of interest in the case will reportedly be her boyfriend, Nick Gordon.

The Houston family said on Sunday night that Bobbi Kristina 'is finally at peace in the arms of God.'

In a statement via a representative, they said: 'Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July, 26 2015, surrounded by her family. She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.'

May her soul rest in peace.

Teenagers stab parents, siblings to death

Two Oklahoma teenagers, 18 year old Robert Bever and his 16-year-old brother, Michael Bever, have been accused of stabbing and killing five family members.

They were arrested after their 13-year-old sister who survived the attack identified them as the attackers in the Wednesday night massacre in Broken Arrow, OK.

The news comes as it was revealed the one of the victims, 12-year-old Daniel, had called 911 just before dying alongside his parents, David, 52, and April, 44, and siblings Christopher, 7, and Victoria, 5.

Although police originally said a 911 call from the home was silent, resulting in a welfare check, it has now been revealed in documents filed to support the teenager's arrest that a caller from the home was able to tell police that 'their brother was attacking their family'.

The family were found dead at 11.30pm on Wednesday in their luxurious house in Broken Arrow, southeast of Tulsa.

Crystal Bever, 13, is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Her two-year-old sister, Autumn Bever, was discovered unharmed and is in state custody. She was allegedly born prematurely and her parents had recently started a nonprofit to help other families who have premature children.

Investigators said a 12-year-old male called 911 at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday and said they needed help because their brother was attacking the family. When officers arrived to the 700 block of Magnolia Court, they found blood on the porch and could hear a faint female voice inside asking for help.

When they made their way inside to the gruesome scene, they found the girl, who had been stabbed multiple times, the document says. The 12-year-old who called 911 was dead, they said.

"The young girl was still alive and made statements to the officers that her brothers [were] responsible for attacking her and her family," the arrest report says.

As reported earlier, police and a K9 officer were able to track down Bever and his 16-year-old brother in a wooded area behind the home, and the new report reveals they found fresh footprints in the back yard. The two were arrested and placed in the Broken Arrow city jail then transferred to the Tulsa County Jail on Friday.

Bever was booked on five first-degree murder complaints and one count of aggravated domestic assault and battery with a deadly weapon. In his mugshot, Bever appears to have blood splatters and mud on his face, and BAPD Cpl. Leon Calhoun said that many of the officers who have been involved in the investigation are disturbed by his demeanor.

"He has a smirk on his face …I don't know if there's any remorse whatsoever based on that picture," Calhoun said of Robert Bever's first mugshot. A second mugshot was taken once he was transferred to Tulsa County.

At this time, the youngest brother's name has not been made public in any news releases sent out by Broken Arrow police. A Tulsa County jailer, however, identified him to News On 9 as Michael Bever.

The 13-year-old girl survived surgery and is said to be stable at a local hospital.

Police said on Thursday that multiple knives and a hatchet were found in the home and are believed to be the murder weapons.

Son kills his 74-year-old father to prove how 'big and bad he was'

A Missouri man has been charged with viciously murdering his 74-year-old father, by lying on his head to prove how 'big and bad he was.'

Kyle Webb, 44, allegedly killed his father, Franklin Webb, late Saturday night at the home they shared in Grandview, Missouri.

The father reportedly wasn't pleased with how his son was cleaning up around a leaky pipe and complained about it.

Infuriated with anger about his dad's complaints, Kyle Webb attempted to scare his dad by acting as though he was going to hit him with an empty vodka bottle, according to the police report.

The father tried to punch his son, but fell backwards in the process, hitting a kitchen chair before he fell to the floor.

That's when Kyle Webb reportedly jumped on top of his father.

'I had to prove how big and bad I was,' Webb told police of attacking his father.

He told officers that he positioned his father's arm across his throat and then laid himself across his head as the man lay face down on the floor.

Police said that Webb sat on his father's head for up to 12 minutes because he wanted to 'prove a point' about being able to control his dad.
He waited roughly three minutes before calling police after his father lost consciousness, the police report states.

The elderly man was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office has charged Webb with second degree murder and his bail has been set at $100,000.

After his father died, Webb told police that he wanted to take responsibility for what happened, saying several times, "It's on me."
