There is no magic wand to make our economy better overnight – Oyegun

EXTRAORDINARY TIMES REQUIRE EXTRAORDINARY ACTIONS

Protocols
Let me formally welcome our party’s torchbearers in the upper chamber of the incoming 8th National Assembly to this retreat.
This is the first formal interaction between our Senators-elect and the leadership of our party, since the conclusion of the 2015 General Elections.
While I congratulate all of you on your elections, I must quickly add that I don’t envy you. This is because you are being called to service at one of the most challenging periods in the history of our nation.
APC briefing on Boko Haram Sponsors

Unparalleled commitment, uncommon patriotism, unprecedented hard work and indeed a reservoir of your innermost strength will be required, as our party takes the centre stage in the next few days and begins to implement its programmes for the benefit of the long suffering people.
Make no mistake about it, the days ahead will be tough, and this is not crying wolf.
From the first day of this government, a total of 4.1 trillion Naira will be required for sundry expenses, including oil subsidy payment, arrears of salaries at federal and state levels and debt servicing, just to mention a few.
Put this against the background of the falling oil prices, the unprecedented 60-billion-dollar debt which the outgoing government has left for the incoming one, the largely depleted Excess Crude Account (ECA), the 60 billion dollars that have been lost in the last four years to crude oil theft (and which are perhaps still being lost as we speak), the need to rapidly create jobs for our teeming army of unemployed youths, enhance the security of the citizenry and improve the economy, and you will begin to understand the enormity of the challenges ahead.
This is not a lamentation forum, but still, we must tell ourselves the truth about the state of the nation, and the expectations of our people.
In fact, to a number of our compatriots, by May 30th, a day after the swearing of our President-elect, all the streets in Nigeria will be air conditioned while electricity will become stable and fuel scarcity will be a thing of the past.
Yes, we will get there, but it won’t happen overnight.
You, our Senators-elect, will be called upon to take extraordinary actions to address the extraordinary challenges that confront our nation.
The incoming President, more than anyone else, needs the support and cooperation of the 8th National Assembly to fulfill his campaign promise to Nigerians.
You may be required to pass important bills at very short notices. This will not be unprecedented but will require a buy-in to the programmes of the President and the Party and a willingness to work with him and the party for the benefit of all Nigerians. The demands on you will be tasking, but you are up to the task!
Fortunately we have the numbers, even though we believe that a bipartisan effort – to which we are open – will be a better deal
And there is good news! You, our Senators-elect, share in the dreams of the President and our party to make our country great again.
May I also remind you that all eyes will be on our party – and by extension on all of you – to see if our government will walk its talk in terms of running a lean and effective government, one that eschews waste, corruption and indiscipline, and one that will harness the nation’s human, material and natural resources for the well being of the people.
Finally, let me end on a note of caution.
There is no magic wand to make our economy better overnight. Against the realities on the ground, some of which I listed earlier, reviving our economy will be a long and tortuous process. Bold decisions will need to be taken, and this can only be possible if there is a synergy among our party, the National Assembly and the President. We know you will not fail us, and you will not fail Nigerians.
Well, the 1921 Nobel Laureate for Physics, Dr. Albert Einstein, must have had a moment like this in mind, while responding to a question.
He was asked: “Dr. Einstein, why is it that when the mind of man has stretched so far as to discover the structure of the atom, we have been unable to devise the political means to keep the atom from destroying us?”
His answer: “That is simple, my friend. It is because politics is more difficult than physics.”
Now that you know the nobility of the calling in which you have found yourselves, I am sure you will not hesitate to show that politicians too can solve problems!

Godwin arrived the ancient town around 10 p.m. on Thursday through Ikole in Ekiti State.

He said on Friday that the trekking was his own way of giving his support to ensure the realisation of Saraki’s senate president ambition.

Godwin said that he was inspired by the intelligence and exemplary leadership style of Saraki.
The trekker became an instant hero as the news of his arrival spread in Omu-Aran with some youths, especially commercial motorcyclist struggling to catch a glimpse of him.

PDP Governors lay trap for Jonathan

PDP Governors Lay Trap For Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) outgoing governors have instigated a secret plot to checkmate President Goodluck Jonathan.

The governors allegedly plan to challenge Jonathan’s grip on the party after the handover on May 29.
They said the president should either allow internal democracy or else they may split the PDP by forming a new party.

Apart from being the new chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the PDP, Jonathan has also taken over the National Working Committee (NWC) with his trusted ally, Prince Uche Secondus, as the acting national chairman.

According to a source who asked for anonymity, most outgoing governors and the remaining PDP governors are uncomfortable with the takeover of the party’s structure by Jonathan.

“We are all waiting for May 29 when the President would have handed over to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to talk about the future of the PDP.

“When the President does not have executive powers to direct the party anyhow, we will all be on the same page and tell ourselves the home truth.

“So, the governors are also laying ambush for Jonathan to step down from power before striking and drawing a line on how to reshape the PDP. Their demand is simple: The PDP must be reformed through internal democracy.

“If there is no internal democracy, then the party may split as long as Jonathan sticks to the control of the structure of the party.

“Nobody has ever owned the PDP and none can own it. Where Jonathan is in total control, we will opt for the realignment of forces in the polity and a new national party will emerge. Then, Jonathan can then become the PDP’s undertaker.

One outgoing governor said: “On the reformation of the PDP, you should wait till after May 29.”

There have been suggestions that the governors are pushing for either Governor  Sule Lamido of Jigawa state or Governor Ibrahim Shema as the next national chairman of the party.

Meanwhile, indications emerged on Friday that the president had struck a deal with members of the National Working Committee (NWC) to force the ex-national chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, to resign.

A highly-placed party source said: “There was an understanding with the presidency that Muazu would go, but NWC members would remain for strategic reasons. Having fulfilled our own part of the bargain, the President is also keeping to it.

“This was the context in which Secondus spoke at the Presidential Villa on Thursday when he said NWC members would not resign. It is part of politics; there is nothing we can do.

“The alternative is for all the NWC members to go in one swoop which will create a big vacuum in the party.”

Meanwhile, PDP governors had called on Governor Godswill Akpabio to resign from the post of chairman of the party’s governors’ forum.

Bode George, wife behind NDLEA’s raid on my home – Kashamu

Buruji Kashamu
Buruji Kashamu, the Nigerian senator-elect wanted by United States authorities for alleged drug offences, has accused a leader of his political party, Bode George, of instigating a raid on his residence in Lagos in an attempt to extradite him to the U.S.

Nearly two dozen operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, stormed Mr. Kashamu’s home Saturday. It was unclear if they sought to arrest Mr. Kashamu.

A U.S federal grand jury, in 1998, charged Mr. Kashamu and 14 others for their alleged involvement in an international conspiracy to smuggle heroin into America.

He denies any wrongdoing and says the American government is mistaking him for another person.
Mr. Kashamu has instituted a lawsuit to block any move by the Nigerian government to release him to face trial in the U.S.

In a statement Saturday, the PDP leader said he had confirmed that the Nigerian government, through the Attorney General of the Federation, did not authorise the raid on his home.

He said his political rival, Mr. George, instigated his wife, who heads the anti-narcotic agency, to invade his home as part of a plot to extradite him.

The statement, signed by Mr. Kashamu’s media, Austin Oniyokor, said “this latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality”.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) this morning (Saturday,23rd May, 2015) at about 4:30am surrounded the Lekki Phase 1, Lagos residence of Prince Buruji Kashamu to allegedly effect his arrest following a purported extradition request from the US.

“This latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality. As a matter of fact, the court has ordered parties in the matter including the NDLEA to maintain status quo until judgment is delivered on Wednesday 27th May 2015.

“We have confirmed that they do not have a warrant of arrest, just as the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has said that it did not give any order to carry out this illegality,” the statement said.

Mr. Kashamu said he had “confirmed that this illegality is being designed and executed by Chief Bode George whose wife is the Director General of the NDLEA, all in a bid to score cheap political points.”

Mr. Kashamu urged “all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on NDLEA, Chief George and his wife to toe the path of the rule of law and follow due processes, Kashamu cried out”.

‘Nigeria is not a Banana republic! The United States (US) being the bastion of democracy, the rule of law and due process should not lend itself to this kind of illegality,” he said.

Weightlifter dumps girlfriends, opts for new life as a woman

Richard Stuart-McHardy

With his boyish looks and a beautiful lady always in his arm, Richard Stuart-McHardy was the envy of his mates. Gulping ten pints every night at the bar, lifting heavy weights at the gym and a career lined up in the Royal Navy, everything was rolling on smoothly for McHardy.

But in private, the 28-year-old from Essex, England, was putting on make-up in his bedroom and dreaming of life as a woman. Repulsed by his muscles, Richard felt so trapped in his body that one day he walked into work wearing a dress to the amazement of his colleagues and changed his name to Ri Ri Fox.

Ri Ri now lives as a woman and has even been referred to a Gender Identity Clinic.

“To my friends and family, I seemed like a proper lad. I would drink beer every day and all of my male mates wished they could lift as much as me,” Ri Ri said.

“I always had a stunning girlfriend on my arm. Girls would tell me I had the charm of Danny Dyer and the looks of Ryan from The OC. I had sold this super-masculine image to everyone but actually I was sinking into depression, wishing that I could be a woman.”

Ri Ri, who is currently unemployed, now dreams about settling down with the perfect man.

“I’m definitely looking for a boyfriend now. I have lots of lovely girlfriends around me so it would be amazing to have a white wedding with lots of bridesmaids.

“I’m seemed to have the perfect life when I was a bloke but now as a woman, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I can’t wait to meet my soulmate and adopt a baby one day. I can’t wait to discover what life has in store for me,” Ri Ri said.

At Chinese restaurant, short skirt means cheap meal

Short

In a bid to improve sales, a Chinese restaurant recently ran a special promotion by offering discounts to female customers based on the length of their skirts. For the restaurant, the shorter the skirt, the higher the discount.

The amount of skin showed above the knee is measured upon arrival and the discount percentage was determined accordingly. The promotion, which began last week at Yang Jia Hot Pot restaurant in Jinan, was a huge success, according to Shanghaiist. Dozens of women lined up outside the establishment, waiting to have their skirts measured. The highest hemline recorded was 13 inches above the knee, attracting a huge 90-percent discount. The lowest was at three inches, earning a 20 percent saving.

Eason Yang, founder of Yang Jia Hot Pot, said that the promotion was important because this happens to be the “low-season” for hot pot restaurants.

“We wanted to start a promotional campaign that could attract our core audience,” he explained. “Our restaurant has opened for five months. We have one special promotion every month. We wanted these promotions to bring good sales to us.”

Given the success of the hemline promotion, the restaurant plans to run it again later this month – on May 23 and 24.
